SERMONS

Grit

The Apostle Paul was the most effective missionary during the infancy of the 1st century church. Paul traveled, preached, planted churches and left capable men to lead those churches. During his time in ministry, Paul wrote 13 of the New Testament books we enjoy today. Many of these were letters written to the churches he helped start while on his missionary journeys. 2 Timothy is the last letter Paul wrote as he was waiting for execution in a Roman cell. These are his last words to his protégé, Timothy, and to the churches he loved so much.

If you were in the same situation, what would you talk about? Would you be urgent and passionate? Would you talk about the weather and who was going to do well in the next NFL season? Would you spend your last letter talking about trivial matters? OR would you get down to business? In 2 Timothy, we hear the wisdom of a man who has served the Lord faithfully pass on to Timothy the ministry of Jesus Christ and His gospel. This book is raw, emotional, intense, personal, and gritty. This is what we need in our day. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.
